This is the only one-volume reference for these reefs, which are more or less non-tourist because water tends to have low visibility. They are biologically busy places, and the book is a worthwhile investment for those who want to dive into the details. Islands in the Sand is an excellent compilation of all that is known about this important habitat and is the sole source of such information. It is essential for the library of anyone with an interest in the ecology of this region, those tasked with resource management, coastal land use planners, scientists, and students. In fact, many nearshore reefs in Florida aren’t coral but instead rocky limestone outcroppings, and they’re often found in murky water. Like coral reefs, these nearshore reefs support diverse marine communities, are critical habitat for economically valuable fishes, and help reduce shoreline erosion. Unlike coral reefs, however, they’re often poorly mapped and incompletely surveyed. This is unfortunate because nearshore reefs are increasingly threatened by declining water quality, increased storm activity, and sometimes even burial during beach restoration projects.
